Secular India

“Western dictionaries define secularism as absence of religion but Indian secularism does not mean irreligiousness. It means profusion of religions.” ― Shashi Tharoor

It is this idea of Secularism that we need to fight for! As this idea is the very essence of our ancient civilization as expressed in these lines:
Ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti (Truth is one, sages call it by various names)" -Rig Veda Samhita 1.164.46

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). – Maha Upanishad

Such thoughts of universalism and humanism form the bedrock of our civilization. To belong to a civilization that gave the world Buddha, Basavanna and Gandhi, it is the civilizational responsibility that we each carry to carry forward the message of peace, love and harmony; to uphold the values of acceptance and tolerance as propounded by Swami Vivekananda. Such a call for hate-free socity becomes even more dire as we grasp the realities of our present times where bigotry, decimation & exploitation have become a new-normal. It is pertinent that a civilization like ours doesn’t give into the fascist & xenophobic rhetoric.

These attempts to spread such rhetoric are made by organizations that are a product of recent times who seek their inspiration from figures such Mussolini and Hitler. They use nationalism and Hindu Dharma to masquerade their vile ideology of hate, bigotry and sectarianism. So let us reclaim our culture, our philosophy and our civilization!
